How it works

It contains a tiny chip that monitors the resistance between the two sewable holes.
The resistance signify two different button presses:
  • If the resistance is less than 1kΩ: forward/volume up
  • If the resistance is more than 10kΩ: backward/volume down
You can use actual resistors, conductive fabrics, tilt sensors, or other types of sensors.

The chip also speaks the "Apple Accessory Protocol" which allows it to communicate with iPods and iPhones over the dock connection. Find out more about this protocol here.
